And while those skills have their place, they’re not the thing that makes a coordinator want to put you on set.So what does? They can take that same physical ability and make it disappear into a story. The camera doesn’t see the technique — it sees the character, the moment, the consequence.That’s a harder skill to develop. None of those things come from doing more reps in the gym.<h2 id="78682844-219f-4bb0-9842-9762bc90097f" data-toc-id="78682844-219f-4bb0-9842-9762bc90097f" style="font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Why Realistic Always Beats Impressive</h2>Think about your favourite fight scenes in film. The ones that really land. Chances are they’re not the most technically perfect — they’re the most believable.A bar fight doesn’t look like a martial arts showcase. It looks messy, desperate, and grounded. When a performer can make that messiness intentional — when the stumble is controlled, the reaction is timed, the fall is placed exactly where the camera needs it — that’s craft.Highly polished technique can actually work against you. It signals that you might be hard to direct, difficult to match with untrained cast, and more interested in the move than the moment.<h2 id="46a07f1b-2c3d-42e9-bdd0-3a6ad50d9d4e" data-toc-id="46a07f1b-2c3d-42e9-bdd0-3a6ad50d9d4e" style="font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">The Bar Fight Problem</h2>We use bar fight training as one of the best examples of this principle in action.A bar fight sequence asks a performer to do several things at once:•&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Sell hits that don’t make contact•&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Take falls on hard, unforgiving surfaces•&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; React before the action arrives, not after•&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Move through a chaotic scene while keeping camera angles in mind•&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Connect each beat into a fluid, readable piece of storytellingNone of that is about being a better fighter. All of it is about being a better performer.When students at NZSS work through a bar fight sequence, the goal isn’t to look tough. It’s to look real.
